1.Projected Realities

Projected Realities is a series of four oil paintings animated through experimental projection mapping. Each of the paintings (Floating Lanterns, Open Door, Seeing Eye, and Spider Web) is treated as both a finished object and a projection surface, so the still image and moving images overlap in a new way.

The work sets a traditional medium which endures throughout decades against a new media art discipline which is scaled in seconds. The painted surface holds still while the projected light shifts, extending the subject and proposing new ways of interpreting the paintings.

Jeff Watson Memorial Digital Futures Award awarded at OCADU GradEx 2026.

This project was a result of a four-month long exploration at the intersection of oil painting and projection mapping. The subject choices and compositions of the paintings were designed to leave room for additional animation, photographed and rebuilt as a series of layer masks and animations inside of AfterEffects. The animations were then mapped back onto the physical canvases and sequenced using TouchDesigner and adapted for viewing at the OCADU yearly graduate exhibition.
